What is genre?
Genre is putting films into different groups by base on the conventions.
How and why is it used?
It is important for both audience and institution.
For the Audience:
- Have the brief idea about the film
- Can make choices to what kind of movie they want to see
- Set up expectation of the film
For the Institution:
- Know the genre conventions and chose the audience group base on the genre
- Set rules guide of the film
- Use the genre on marketing and sell
What is sub-genre?
Sub-genre can give further detail categorise of the main genre. It can give a more detailed information of the type of the film which can attract audiences who like this type.
For example there are many different sub genres in Comedy. They are all comedy film, but their style and the way to present are different.
- Romantic comedy
- Black comedy
- Slapstick
- Farce
- Musical comedy
- Comedic thrillerAnd same for the horror movies:
- Zombie
- Slasher
- Monster
- Vampire
What is a hybrid genre?
It is when a movie combine two main genre together. For example, the film has both action and romantic elements in it. This is a very classic example because most of the boys like action films, and the girls like romance films. So this hybrid genre can attract both gender. The benefit is to attract a wider audience so more people will watch it which means they can make more money.
The Twilight film has the hybrid genre, it combines romance, horror and fantasy together.
What are the things you associate with genre?
Conventions – conventions for the genre of the film are base on the topic, character and the setting. These are like the stereotype of the different genre. Audience are expecting certain elements in the film because of the convention in the genre.
