Two orders arrived.

Roles on set

In our group, we assign the roles and make sure everyone have chance to work on set. Max will be the camera operator, Gi will be the director and part of the editor, and I will be the art director and the editor.

Director

Director is a really important role on set. This person leads everything, always work with the producer. Director need strong creativity and leadership. Gi is the director in our production group. I think they are the best choice as they are very good at arranging and commanding both cast and crew. They are able to communicate effectively with the actors, making sure the actors know how to present the story. In addition, Gi has the ability to have an overall grasp of the entire opening sequence as they did part of the storyboard and outline of the plot before. I believe Gi will lead the group really well on the shooting day.

Art Director

Art director is responsible for the makeup, the costumes, the props and the location. It is the person who works on all visual part on set. Art director work closely with director and producer, they determine their desired visual work of the film together. I will be the art director in our production group. I have the creative ability. I did the storyboard with Gi, I can work well with the director on the visual part on set. For the makeup and costumes, I also took part in and did a independent research on creating special effect makeup. So I have a basic idea of the visual effect on styling and the settings.

Camera Operator

Camera Operator is responsible for shooting and capturing the actions in the film. They will also need to work on the lighting. Max is the camera man in our group. He is very interested in camera operating, and he practised shooting in our test shoot so he has experienced it before. He is good at shooting in different camera compositions and angles. Moreover, he is familiar with setting up the equipments. And he did all the descriptions for the storyboard, so he is fully understand what will the shots be in our opening title sequence. On the shooting day, he will need to set up the cameras and filming in the two locations. His role will be really important as it is directed related to how our opening title sequence will looked like.

Editor

An editor need to review the story and then putting the different footage together. They also need to add the sound effects to the video. They put different angle shots together to make the whole movie. Different editing method can create a different impact. In our group, I will be the editor and Gi will help me. We both have the creativity and eyes on details. And we have practiced a few editing sequence before. We need to be really careful with the cuts between different angle shots and create a nervous and horrified impact at the end. Furthermore, we will find a suitable sound track of the motorcycle in the opening title sequence.

Producer

Film producers work with director closely. They are responsible for organising the crew and cast. They need take care of all the elements on set and help the director to check the aspects of the shoot. Producers monitor the production process and make sure everything is prepared and ready to go the night before shooting day.

Division of labour is really important for production because it is social collaboration, so people who specialise in different skills work together can create the best shots. My roles are the art director and the editor. 

For the art director, I am responsible for all the props and costumes, I need to make sure to bring them all to the set. And I need to have the visual idea of the special effect makeup for the actors. Furthermore, during shooting the different angle shots, I need to help the director to make sure the continuity in each shots which is really important. Before the shooting day, I need to make sure which settings we are going to use and the environments. On the shooting day, I will take all the props and costumes, and also the makeup tools. Art director is really important as they are responsible for all the visual part in the production. In order to make sure everything goes well on the shooting day, I will make a rough makeup plans for the actors and also a list of all the props and costumes we will need so we won’t miss anything.

For the editor, Gi and I will both work on editing after the shoot day. We will bring the shot list on the shooting day so we can make sure we shoot every shots we will need for editing. Also, we can refer to our test shoot to find out what can be kept and what needs to be added and improved.

Shooting Schedule

In order for us to be more productive on shooting day, and to prevent situations that we don't have enough time to shoot or don't know what to do on the day of the shoot, we planned a shooting schedule.

 After placing the orders, I find out that the order of the trousers and bags is arriving just before the shooting day. In general, it will arrived early so the estimated date will be next week. But in case it doesn’t, I find some other options which will deliver the next day. Also, we have some similar costumes ourselves.

So for the trousers, in case it doesn’t arrived on time, we can use Gi’s trousers as they has a similar one. And we can use Max’s backpack which looks a bit old.

Call Sheet

We have organised all the contacts for our crew and cast so that we can get in touch on that day easily in case we need to. I hid all the personal informations but we have a form with emails and phone calls.

 Our Final Choices

So for the trousers, we choose this dark green cargo trousers. Because it looks really wildness and it is quite cheap. And the material is also suitable for surviving.

For the T-shirt, we realised the material of the sport T-shirt might be very hard to rib off. So instead of using the sport T-shirt, we choose this tight grey T-shirt which looks really sporty and comfortable too. In addition, it sales in pack of two which is really convenient and cheap for us.

For the bag, I will buy two - one is simple black backpack, and one is the brown waist bag as the accessorise. Because the black backpack will only appear a few second in the beginning and we might destroy it so I choose a really cheap one. 

For the shoes, we ask Meadow if she has any shoes that she doesn’t mind getting dirty. She can bring her black boots. It will work well as it looks older and dirtier than a brand new pair.

For the belt, Gi has a suitable brown belt which looked old and used. So we can borrow it on the shooting day, and decided whether to use it.

 For the shoes, I search for both trainers and boots. It should be easy to run and dirt resistant as the girl is surviving in the wilderness.

Base on the tense atmosphere and the post-apocalyptic feeling, we need to add more apocalyptic and sporty elements on the costume. Then we can add fake blood on it afterwards which will help to create the atmosphere in the opening sequence.

So for the T-shirt, rather than oversized and fashion style, I search for sporty, tight styles.

And for the accessory, we find a waist bag which can make the character more survivor. In addition, we could add a belt that look old and used. 

Foley Sound

Foley sound is the sound effects that are added to the film through post-production in order to increase the audio impact. It is called Foley because of Jack Foley who develop this technique first. Foley can supplement some special sound effects, and can also cover up some noise during shooting. Like the footsteps and the door closing sound in the film can be re-recorded later. These sounds don't all have to come from the same object or movement in the film, for example frozen vegetables can make sounds of broken bones. The foley sound artist will make the audience will all the sound effect are real and they won’t even notice these are re-recorded. They always record them in the recording studio.

These are the pictures of the props I used to create it:

From the video clip, I recreated the door closing, the switch, the running footsteps, the iron plate impact and the dinosaur sound effect. I use the iron buckle to create the flipping switch sound. And I hit the washing machine board to simulate the sound of them hitting the iron cabinet. For the dinosaur sound effects, I use the dog growl sound and the snoring sound to simulate it.
